Relocating to Tasmania

Can I 'try out' Tasmania for a few years?

Lets assume (for whatever bizarre reason!) that you do not wish to undertake a wholehearted move to Tasmania, but would rather live there for a few years to see if it is really for you. There are a couple of popular options.

Study

One option is to come to Tasmania for study purposes. Between them, University of Tasmania and the Australian Maritime College offer numerous undergraduate and postgraduate level courses.

Note, however, that as an overseas student, you will need to pay full University fees, which can range from A$10,000 and up per year, and are obliged to leave the country after their studies are completed. Overseas students are allowed to work for 20 hours per week to offset the cost of their education, as specified in the Australian student visa regulations. It would be wise to find out all the rules for student visa holders before applying!

Temporary work or business

The Australian government has one visa category for temporary workers or those who wish to conduct a business in Australia. This type of visa is good for four years.

If applying as a temporary worker, you will need to have an Australian job offer in hand. Like migrant visas, this type of visa is also limited by a quota.
