Contacting Tasmania: Questions for those outside Australia
How long do letters take to reach Tasmania?
The time taken for mail to reach Australia depends on how it is sent and where
it is sent from.
- From North America
- The standard time for air mail letters is six or seven days, one day longer for small packages. The US Postal Service has a Global Priority Service which they claim gets to Australia within three or four days; six days seems to be closer to the average.
- From Europe
- Letters from Europe may take seven days to reach Australia. However, it see
ms that letters from Australia to Europe may get there in four or five
days.
Sea mail from both the United States and Europe can take up to three or four months, although times of three to four weeks have also been seen.
Even packages sent by air mail can take a month, particularly if they are
selected for inspection by Australian customs. Seasonal changes (e.g.
Christmas) can triple the delivery times.
