Contacting Tasmania: Questions for those in Australia

How do I convert from six- to eight-digit numbers?

Tasmania changed from six-digit local numbers to eight digits on 19 August 1996, and six-digit dialling stopped working on 18 May 1997. As this was some years ago, most contact information should now show the full eight-digit number.

But, if you only know the old area code and number, it is easy to determine what to dial:

  1. Dial the new area code, (03), followed by a 6
  2. Dial the last digit of the old area code.
  3. Dial the old six-digit telephone number
For instance, to dial the old Hobart number (002) 123456, you would dial (03) 6212-3456.

The old area codes were (002) for southern Tasmania and the east coast, (003) for northern Tasmania and the north-east, and (004) for north-west Tasmania and the west coast.
