Visiting Tasmania

When is the best time to visit?

The time you choose to visit Tasmania will depend largely upon personal circumstances, such as the things you are interested in seeing, where you are visiting from, and whether you are travelling with children.

Weather-wise, the best time to visit is from November through to March. While Tasmania has a nice spring, that is the season where the weather is least predictable, so if you are making very rigid travel plans, September-October could be a time to avoid.

Financial considerations may affect your travel plans. The peak holiday season in Tasmania is in summer (December to February); by travelling outside of this period you can get lower-priced fares and accommodation. More details about travel seasons are given in the Getting to Tasmania questions.

Travelling during school holidays or around major event dates may require advance bokings. The Department of Tourism, Arts and the Environment maintains a list of events in Tasmania.

If one particular month had to be named as the "best", it would probably be March. Travelling in March you get shoulder-season fares, the tail-end of Tasmania's summer weather, and miss the school holidays. For those travelling with families, either trade off the warmer weather for cheaper travel in August, or make use of your Thanksgiving holiday in November. Of course, if you are planning well in advance and money is no object, aim for January or February.
