Visiting Tasmania

Will people be able to understand me?

The official language of Australia (including Tasmania) is English. Those from native English-speaking backgrounds will not have problems being understood in Tasmania; but remember that to locals, you will appear to be the one with an accent!

Those who speak English as a second language should also encounter very few language problems. As a multi-cultural society, many Australians are used to listening to non-native English speakers. This is more the case in city or tourist-oriented areas.

Non-English speakers are catered for only in specialty areas. For instance, tourist operators may have staff who speak one or more languages in addition to English. The average Tasmanian citizen probably has only a limited exposure to foreign languages, if any.
