Broadband internet access is now commonly available in most non-rural areas of Tasmania. The best tool for selecting a broadband plan is Whirlpool's broadband choice. DSL is available starting at A$20 per month. However, most broadband plans require some type of term committment. If you will not be in Tasmania for long, or if you cannot afford broadband, dialup services are still available. Many broadband providers also offer dialup; or check the Yahoo! directory. A limited degree of free Internet access is available through institutions such as the state library or rural online access centres. Unlike in the US and New Zealand, local phone calls from residences are not free (approximately 25c per call). This is a factor to consider when comparing the "true cost" of broadband and dialup.
