Virtually all Tasmanian households own a television set. About 80% own a VCR, but in 2002 only 15% owned a DVD player. Very few (under 12%) subscribe to any type of pay TV. Most households have a fixed-line telephone, and nearly two-thirds have at least one mobile phone. About half of Tasmanian households own a computer and one-third have Internet access at home. In 2003, there were 711 cars registered in Tasmania for every 1000 people. Ownership of consumer items such as microwaves, stereo systems and the like is widespread, but probably just below the level of many other western countries.
