In addition to native Tasmanian animals (such as the Tasmanian Devil), native Australian animals such as echidnas, wombats, kookaburras, lorikeets, sulphur crested cockatoos and possums can be observed in their natural environment in Tasmania. The largest species of kangaroos don't live 'wild' in Tasmania as the environment does not suit them, but their relatives the wallabies are plentiful. Koalas generally aren't found naturally in Tasmania, however you can see them at the Talune and Trowunna Wildlife Parks (touching allowed but not holding). Most of the previously mentioned species, including the larger kangaroo types, can be found at the various wildlife parks, where it is possible to hold/feed/touch them. Some can be extremely friendly! Many native animals live in rural areas and are nocturnal, so they are unlikely to be encountered in a casual stroll through suburbia. The exceptions are possums, which regularly intrude into gardens, and some wallabies. [Back to Fauna of Tasmania questions] Last reviewed 2006-08-05 17:39:54
