Contacting Tasmania: Questions for those outside Australia

How do I phone someone in Tasmania?

First determine your international access code. This varies by country (e.g. it is 011 in the USA). Then follow these three steps:

  1. Dial the international access code for your country.
  2. Dial 61-3.
  3. Dial the eight-digit Tasmanian phone number.
For example, to reach the Hobart number 6212 3456 from the United States, dial 011-61-3-62123456.

Because the international access code varies from country to country, the above number would usually be shown on stationary as +61-3-6212-3456. i.e. the plus means "dial your international access code first".

Cost: Rates vary dramatically depending on where you call from and the phone company used. From Europe, the cost will generally be in the range of €0.50 and €1.00 per minute. From the USA, a call can range from $2-$3 per minute (if not on any "calling plan") down to $0.04/min. Internet-based (VoIP) phone companies also offer calls in the $0.03-$0.04/min range, and some offer "calling plans" which provide unlimited calling to Australia.

When to call: The best time to call Tasmania from the USA is between about 8 pm and 1 am.

If you only have a six digit local number: Insert a 6 and the last digit of the old area code before the six digit local number. For example, (004) 123456 and +61-04-123456 would be dialled as +61-3-6412 3456.
